INTERVIEW - The Upper Room by
The Upper Room will release a brand new single ‘All Over This Town’ on February 27th. Taken from recording sessions for their debut album which will follow in the summer, the single is a fantastic insight into a band who will surely become one of the brightest new UK bands to watch over the next six months.
Since the release of their debut single in 2004, the Brighton four piece have been touring the UK with El Presidente, Hope of the States, Electric Soft Parade and Longview amongst others. They also spent a good part of 2005 putting the finishing touches to their album in London’s Dairy Studios.
‘All Over This Town’ is a contagiously catchy song that showcases The Upper Room’s unusual contradictory mix of dark lyrics and pop perfect melodies. It was also bizarrely written on Christmas Day whilst frontman Alex Miller was trying to escape the heat of the kitchen inbetween main course and dessert. The Upper Room will head out on tour in February for a second time with El Presidente, as well as playing with The Rifles.
Q - You're releasing All Over This Town again this month, what are your
hopes
for it this time?
A - The original single was a limited release on Skye Records, an
independent
label. This time will be our first major label release and we hope
that we
will win over lots of new fans with the song.
Q - Any more songs written on Christmas Day last year?
A - No, but in the run up to Christmas I did write my first ever
'Christmas
Song'. It's very festive but slightly depressing so I don't think
we'll be
recording it.
Q - You were inspired by Phil Spector to move away from dance music, how
has
his style inspired The Upper Room?
A - Phil Spector produced pop-perfect music with bitter-sweet lyrics,
this is
very much what our album is about.
Q - You've been tipped for big things this year, what other new acts are
you
fans of?
A - We recently did a gig with a band called Vatican DC, I thought they
were
brilliant, really good songs. Lorraine are also a great band who should
be
huge at some point soon.
Q - You'll be touring with El Presidente, are you fans of their music?
A - Definitely, their songs are very catchy and infectious, they make
great
party music.
Q - How has your career been affected by being on MySpace?
A - I don't think that our career has been affected by being on myspace.
However, it is a great way of keeping in contact with fans and keeping
everyone updated on what we've been doing.
Q - What would
make a great 2006 for you?
A - Playing in front of as many people as possible.
Hopefully we'll be on tour for most of 2006!
