INTERVIEW - The Flies by James Ellaby

After a phenomenal cult reaction to the live cover of ‘Ruby Tuesday’ (now available via Napster), The Flies have opted to rework the track into a downloadable video format to be released November 28th. There will be no cd or dvd and the video download will cease to be available after 31st December. The newly recorded version of Ruby Tuesday is only available as a digital video download. The Flies are the first band to release a track exclusively in this format. We caught up with main-man Sean Cook to find out about this new project...

Q - What made you choose the name The Flies? Was it random or do you identify with them?

A - Yeah, it was random, Bob saw the name in a book and was the only name we could all agree on

Q - So far your new music has only existed online, is that something you want to continue with?

A - For the time being we quite like the idea of it only existing online, but in the near future physical releases are inevitable.

Q - How do you think the internet will shape music in years to come?

A - Not sure that it will shape music in terms of its creative content but it will completely take over the distribution of music and it already has to a large extent.

Q - Are you hoping to build up a loyal bunch of rabid fans on the quiet in the way that Arctic Monkeys have done so successfully?

A - Yeah, it's not that we are following a template laid down by the Arctic Monkeys – however they demonstrate that via the internet you can have a much closer relationship with your fans and distribute music in a much more effective way and break down the old barriers between the people that make the music and the people who listen to it.

Q - What music has influenced you in the writing of the album?

A - We tend not to have any particular formulaic set of influences when writing music, but having said that people like Roy Orbison and Peggy Lee and Krafwork have all played a part. I find the notion of combining 50 & 60s recording techniques with modern technology to be a real intriguing place.

Q - You've said that Lupine Howl are 'on the back-burner' at the moment, but will the third album be released in the near future?

A - The 3rd album will be released but I don’t know when. My focus now is on The Flies and I believe there is a lot more to be had from the creativity from the people involved.

Q - It's getting near Christmas and all the magazines will be making their 'top albums' lists. What is your favourite album/film from this year?

A - I don’t and have never made those kinds of lists, but last night I saw Martha Wainwright play and thought she was great.

Q - What are your hopes for 2006?

A - Hopes for 2006 include to make more Flies records, play some shows and get the Flies to a wider audience
